Yes. Under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act), reporting entities must provide AML/CTF training to all personnel who perform functions relevant to their AML/CTF obligations. This includes initial training when staff are onboarded and ongoing training on a regular basis. For newly regulated entities including law firms, accountants, conveyancers and real estate professionals, AUSTRAC expects that by 1 July 2026, reporting entities will have trained staff on their AML/CTF program and internal processes.

Any business that provides a designated service under the AML/CTF Act must train its staff. This currently includes financial services providers, banks, remittance dealers and gambling operators. From 1 July 2026, it will also include lawyers, conveyancers, accountants, real estate agents. Training must be tailored to each person’s role based on the functions they perform and the money laundering, terrorism financing (ML/TF) risks relevant to that role.

The AML/CTF Act does not prescribe a specific frequency, but AUSTRAC expects training to be provided when a person is employed or engaged, and ongoing during employment or engagement. Most businesses provide AML/CTF training at onboarding, then annually as a refresher, and whenever there are significant changes to regulations, internal policies or ML/TF risk exposure. The frequency and extent of ongoing training will depend on functions the person performs and the ML/TF risks.

AUSTRAC expects reporting entities to develop a staff training plan and outline this in their AML/CTF policies. AML/CTF training needs to cover the business’ obligations under the AML/CTF Act and Rules, and the ML/TF risks relevant to the business. Training should also be tailored so that it is appropriate to the person’s role and responsibilities. For example, some roles may need technical training while others may only need general awareness. Training must be delivered in a way that’s easy for staff to understand.

Yes. AUSTRAC does not mandate a specific delivery format for AML/CTF training. Reporting entities can choose the delivery method, or combination of delivery methods, that works best for their business – including, online courses, in-person training, on-the-job training, or industry events and seminars.

Online training courses are used across regulated sectors and are accepted provided the content is tailored to the business’ industry and ML/TF risks, appropriate to the person’s role, and delivered in a way that is easy to understand. Online delivery can also support compliance by making it easier to track completion and maintain training records – which may help demonstrate how a business is meeting its AML/CTF program obligations.
