In Australia, the AML/CTF regime refers to the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing regime. It is a framework of laws and regulations designed to combat money laundering, terrorism financing, and other serious financial crimes.
Tranche 2 AML refers to the proposed extension of Australia’s AML/CTF regime to include new sectors, known as Designated Non-Financial Businesses and Professions (DNFBPs). This would encompass industries such as legal and accounting services, trust and company service providers, real estate agents, and dealers in precious metals and stones.
In April 2023, the Attorney-General announced proposed reforms to Australia’s AML/CTF regime. The proposed reforms aim to modernise and reduce complexity in the existing regime, as well as extend the AML/CTF regime to additional sectors, known as Tranche 2 professions. A public consultation process was announced alongside the proposed reforms seeking submissions from industry to collect feedback and insights to help shape the reforms. The legislative process is ongoing, with the AML/CTF reforms currently in the Bill stage.
